Discussion has already begun about who fill follow General Conway as the next Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Let us pray that the individual selected will have the same level of moral courage that General Conway possesses. Though I spent more than 30 years in a Navy uniform, I believe that the USMC is the most cherished institution in the United States - and with good reason. Let's not toy with the closest thing we have to perfection in the military.As Thomas Jefferson said, "On matters of style, swim with the current; on matters of principle, stand like a rock." I think the USMC has a little better screening process for who becomes a 4-star than you give them credit...
I can guarantee you that it will be a general that publicly supports gays in the military.

Mr. Gates has recommended Gen Amos as the next CMC. He is currently the ACMC.
He will be the first Naval Aviator to hold the post (to my limited knowledge) if his nomination goes through.
I know that we have always had combatants as CMC's historically, but am not aware of any official requirement to hold a combat arms MOS.
