Peter Munson, USMC on Disruptive Thinkers

Disruptive thinkers are not a threat to good order and discipline, nor to mission accomplishment. Disruptive non-thinkers, on the other hand, are. We are in for times far more challenging than most of our force can currently foresee. In order to find success, we will have to encourage disruptive thinking to spur innovation from the bottom up. This will never happen, however, if we do not get the coming transition right by empowering the right change leaders to think and act disruptively to change our organizational structure and culture from the top down.

"empowering the right change leaders to think and act disruptively"

The Community Foundational Principles clearly empowered all of us (IWOs/CTs), yet few have walked through the very door Community Leadership opened. Each of us should have a side project, question/validate/change the status quo, and leverage our skills to create unique value. Disruptive Thinkers are important, and so are Constructive Doers...

Especially since our enemies are developing disruptive technologies, we have to counter them with disruptive thinking. It won't be sufficient to have the most money to bear on the problem anymore...we have to have the best people. Luckily, Americans are in the best position to do this, if we don't let complacency rule the day.

Great article. Unfortunately, in spite of what we say, our "adaptive" Navy culture rarely appreciates true the innovative and disruptive thinking so desparately needed to counter the threats of today's unconventional battle field.
