USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CVN-79) will be the second in the Gerald R. Ford class of carriers.
John F. Kennedy entered the Navy in October 1941. Serving in the Pacific on a ship known as PT 109, he was in command on Aug. 2,1943, when the ship was struck by an enemy vessel and split in half. JFK led the crew to to safety over the next six days and later received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart.

Sir, Thank you for passing on this information. I was an enlisted sailor who spent some time on CV 67, and I am glad to see this name live to fight another day.
Great choice. There should always be a JFK in the fleet. Then again after JOHN MURTHA and CESAR CHAVEZ, 98% of American citizens past and present would have been an improvement. Continue to love your daily posts!

Good post, and a good name for a ship, on this Memorial Day when I think of the fact that us Sailors could have sacrificed our lives for his decisions and did come close in Oct 1962, practically in sight of Havana. His stand was what the United States citizens needed to hear during those times.
Only one minor problem with post; A PT Boat is not a ship.

"Big John"..."The Head of the Med" will live again! CV67 was my first ship in my 23 year career and happy to see that CVN-79 will go on to fight in many years to come.
