Aviator Eugene B. Ely is seated in his Curtiss pusher biplane on board USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4), during preparations for his return flight to Tanforan field, San Francisco, California, 18 January 1911.
Musings, leadership tidbits and quotes posted by a retired Navy Captain who hung up his uniform a bit too early (even at 30 years). The uniform is in the closet but, he still wears his Navy service on his sleeve. He needs to get over that. But, he just doesn't try hard enough. Rumor is that Eugene Ely staged the first XO Movie Night aboard USS Pennsylvania in 1911. It was a Navy tradition that lasted for nearly 100 years. Captain Opie ended the tradition in 2010 aboard USS Enterprise.
Awesome.
