Own your job

“When doing a job, any job, one must feel that he owns it, and act as though he will remain in the job forever. He must look after his work just as conscientiously, as though it were his own business and his own money. If he feels he is only a temporary custodian, or that the job is just a stepping stone to a higher position, his actions will not take into account the long-term interests of the organization.”

Admiral Hyman Rickover

Admiral Rickover was and still is one of my heroes. But unfortunately he got just a little carried away with this statement. He was the man on top and had nowhere else to go. Everyone in the programs that he headed or anywhere else in the Navy are typically required to move up or move out. And I do believe these individuals still are able to take the long- term interests of the organization into account.

To quote GEN Colin L Powell, USA, Ret...

"Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position goes, your ego goes with it."
