Recently (over)heard in the passageway at Fort Meade

Chief, "What we have here, sir, is a failure to communicate. They are not getting the message."
Captain, "Well, send them my e-mail, again."

One key to success for a leader is supervision of their order / direction, supervision requires communication.

Was your order communicated effectively?
Is it being followed so as to fulfill the commander's intent?
Has the situation changed since the plan was enacted; do you need to alter your order.

A big aperture thing to remember: communication is two-way and you have to stay receptive to be effective. Even in a butt-chewing scenario (perceived to be one-way) the body language and other non-verbal queues will tell you a lot about the person you are calibrating.
