Morals and Ethics

There  is  abundant   evidence around  us for one to conclude that morals and ethics are becoming less prevalent in people's lives. The standards of conduct  which lay deeply buried in accepted thought  for centuries are no longer absolute. People seem unable to  differentiate  between physical relief and moral satisfaction. Many confuse material success in life with virtue.

Admiral H. Rickover

Captain Lambert,

The admiral with his pompous attitude is probably right, most individuals that prescribe to this post only know Admiral Rickover by reputation and never had direct contact with him. What was presented in this post was unlike anything I ever heard him say. His typical presentation back in the early 70’s had nothing to do with morals and ethics, but was a continual barrage against every activity that had to do with support of his endeavors to fulfill his obligation to his sacred NR program. He stated that no shipyard was capable of doing the work required to maintain the maximum capabilities of the nuclear submarine fleet, and the personnel provided to him as nuclear engineers were substandard in his opinion. One of the distinct things that I heard him say was that “The Naval Academy graduate was the scourge of the United States Navy”, tough words but they were right in his opinion, he was a Naval Academy graduate.

As I had explained in previous posts the Admiral was very congenial when he came aboard my submarine in the mid 70’s, as we underwent his prescribed ORSE, he wanted to talk to the Chiefs onboard the Tecumseh and did not at that time generate any animosity toward anything or any subject. He wanted to, and this is my opinion,
express to the Chiefs Quarters that we were the key to maintaining the capabilities of the NR program by our dedication to our duty in providing proper navigation and control of our submarine.

Very Respectfully,

You add a great deal to the discussion from a personal perspective Master Chief and I really appreciate it.

Captain Lambert,

Unlike most blogs where the posts are typically generated to allow folks to spew venom and hate, your posts on the Navy in general and the IW Community in particular, along with leadership tidbits and other words that create discussions amongst the troops are beneficial to many individuals other than Sailors, even though that is your primary reader.

Your blog provides a lot of interesting topics for a Sailor like myself, and if you believe that I make some worthwhile contribution that other Sailors may benefit from, then I am pleased to be able to help them.

Very Respectfully,
E. A. Hughes, FTCM(SS)
US Navy (Retired)
