A note to the Flags - circa 2006

Thanks CAPT, but this is as much a wasted effort then as now. The CW leadership is intellectually, morally and professionally bankrupt. Our flags care about one thing and one thing only - themselves. They look up - never down. It has been that way since at least 2003 and only continues to get worse. You get selected based on who you know and whose EA you are. Nothing more. Performance matters not. Ask any of our sailors and officers what they really think of our Flags. It is there, and it is a symptom of the whole do-nothing community. We're a community of none; 20000+ individuals who think the Navy is just a job, not a way of life. Look at the way we continue to change the rules just for the few. I'm afraid hell is one day coming and the folks who are supposed to be watching out are only admiring their image in the mirror. We get the wake up we deserve.

What does "Look at the way we continue to change the rules just for the few." refer?

@anon 7:51pm. While this letter was to Flag officers believe your comments reflect more than Flags. Our Flags, Captains and SES' all fit your description. The lot of them are not only an embarrassment to our community, but are the very reason our top folks are leaving.

My comments are a bit off from the original topic but figured I would chime in. Wonder if the problem is that we (CW community) are confusing leadership with management. You always hear that "so and so" is going to a leadership position, or "so and so" is the new leader of X group, the new billets in whatever org are leadership positions...but are they? They seem more like management positions which is not leadership. Leaders lead from whatever job they are in...coding, tech development, analysis, training, etc. They inspire those around them, innovate and cultivate new ideas wherever they are working to enhance the overall organization. They are able to obtain more out of the people around them through their work ethic and personality then anyone can simply based on rank. Just because someone takes a designated Navy "leadership" position doesn't make them a leader, it makes them a manager of resources for a certain time period. Nothing more, nothing less.
