Criticism aids growth

My old boss, SECDEF Rumsfeld was fond of saying, "If you're not being criticized, you may not be doing much." If you are a man of action (MOA), you are bound to upset some folks. Providing constructive criticism is an art form in and of itself. How do you practice the art?

  1. Captain Lambert,

In 1963 the first Master Chief I ever worked for, FTCM, John Smith (not a fictitious name) said on occasion to the instructor group he was in charge of that every Sailor should get his butt chewed out often just to keep them on the straight and narrow. And when he received a complaint from our administrative office about something an instructor might have done, or was responsible for, he would find out what the problem was and then would talk to the instructor concerned and then make his judgment known, Master Chief Smith said to me on more than one occasion after he determined what had taken place, “Consider your butt chewed out Chief Hughes.”If you did your job for his teaching group and he felt it was up to his standards he would give you the protection that you needed. If you were not doing the job required you could expect a different outcome.

    Very Respectfully,
