Not all who are in leadership positions are leaders...

That's the scuttlebutt around the scuttlebutt.

  1. You bet!!!!!!!!The more I hear and see the more I am convinced these so called commanders/skippers are nothing but a bunch of self serving imbeciles! They are all part of the “NAVY fraternity club". Grow up already!
Leaders do not command excellence, they build excellence.
To be an effective leader, your followers must have trust in you and they need to be sold on your vision. There is NO TRUST! Especially if the commander/skipper has to ask "do you trust me?" HA !!
Honesty — Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. Deceptive behavior will not inspire trust. Get it?!?
Competent — Base your actions on reason and moral principles. Do not make decisions based on childlike emotional desires or feelings. They have no MORALS!
Forward-looking — Set goals and have a vision of the future.
Inspiring — Display confidence in all that you do. By showing endurance in mental, physical, and spiritual stamina, you will inspire others to reach for new heights.
Fair-minded — Show fair treatment to ALL people. Prejudice is the enemy of justice. Career Judgements for those they command are based upon joining the "fraternity club" outside of work. Really???
Display empathy by being sensitive to the feelings, values, interests, and well-being of others.
    Broad-minded — Seek out diversity.
Straightforward — Use sound judgment to make good decisions. Beware of “Groupthink” at the expense of realistically considering nonjudgemental and ethical courses of action.
My father served in the Navy & was on the USS Missouri September 2, 1945, when Japan formally surrendered. He was a True Leader.
I loved the Navy, but that love has been replaced with disgust and distrust. How SAD!

Ahhhh - the internet. Where nonsensical and broad hyperbole serve as intelligent discourse....

What's the series of key strokes for rolled eyes?

  4. A lot of very good points Anonymous, June 8, 2012 3:05 PM, but I think you are a wee bit hard on commanders/skippers as you referred to them. In 24 years of Navy experience I only had one Commanding Officer that I would have considered using the words you used to describe commanders/skippers, but I did not use those words. My duty was still to obey his orders under the Constitution.

You spoke of WWII and the surrender by Japan in Sept. 1945. Adm. Bull Halsey (excuse my familiarity when addressing high ranking Officers) lost a number of ships and a lot of Sailors in two different typhoons in the Pacific Theater and was not held accountable, there is a tremendous difference in the days of WWII when nearly everybody was considered cannon fodder and had to suffer the price of war. If a Captain, Skipper or Commandant today makes an error in judgment his profile is wiped from the ship website almost immediately.
