Musings, leadership tidbits and quotes posted by a retired Navy Captain (really just a high performing 2nd Class Petty Officer) who hung up his uniform a bit too early. He still wears his Navy service on his sleeve. He needs to get over that. "ADVANCE WARNING - NO ORIGINAL THOUGHT!" A "self-appointed" lead EVANGELIST for the "cryptologic community". Keeping CRYPTOLOGY alive-one day and Sailor at a time. 2015 is 80th Anniversary of the Naval Security Group.
Cyberspace is mentioned at least every other page. Most of references don't say anything that interesting. However, the number of mentions demonstrate again the attention it is getting at the national level.
Good take on the current and future strategic environment and the military role in dealing with it.
Weak as hell on the force structure to support that role. There is a chasm, a gulf between the needs described and implied here and the wish lists of the military Services that have made their way into in the POM. And that gap will widen as the defense budget gets whacked, as it will and certainly should.
The father of an old friend used to say this: 'Talk's cheap - it takes money to buy whisky.' Until what we buy is strategy-tailored and driven by externals, this is a whole bunch of cheap talk as we go off to procure what we want to continue fighting the Cold War and to festoon the Services with the toys they prefer over those needed in the real world.
Our most document on military strategy is the budget. What we say there is dysfunctionally disconnected from the good words in this otherwise fine paper.

If we are, in fact "redefining America's Military Leadership" - what was the old definition and what will be the new definition?
ReplyDeleteGeez, he makes me tired.
