“Just as our troops embody the courage and character that make America’s military the finest in the world, their family members embody the resilience and generosity that make our communities strong. Day after day, week after week, spouses resolutely accomplish the work of two parents, sons and daughters diligently keep up with homework and activities, and parents and grandparents patiently wait for news of their child and grandchild’s safe return. To these families, and to those whose service members never come home, we bear a debt that can never be fully repaid.”
“As America asks ever more of military families, they have a right to expect more of us -- it is our national challenge and moral obligation to uphold that promise.”
And, for your sacrifices, we are going to give you a 1.6% pay raise.

Of course, it's the legislative branch and the Congress critters that determine military benefits.
You may not like him: bit this is a slightly gratuitous shot across his bow. Maybe you can find some legislators from either party spouting similar high-minded rhetoric...and call them out on it the 1.6% too....

You must be new here, the Captain's specialty is gratuitous shots across the bow.

I think I will have to review the President's statement as I missed that on the first pass.

Something this POTUS and FLOTUS are both missing when it comes to the military.
Captain Lambert,
The folks that did all that sacrificing and are recommended to get a 1.6% pay increase, probably already know that the CPI for last fiscal year was 3.9%. That is what is supposed to be used to determine the COLA for the military. And also for us old folks drawing SS.

Nearly everything has increased in price over the last couple of years so the government changes what they calculate that COLA with, but they now do it without considering fuel, and energy prices. Because they are too volatile. Just like they only count the number of unemployed by those that are drawing unemployment compensation not even close to the real number of unemployed.
Very Respectfully,
