Captain Forbes Owen MacVane Retires

Many years ago, a woman asked Forbes' father (Dr. William MacVane) what kind of doctor he was.  Forbes' father replied - "A good one".  The same will be said of Forbes when the question arises - What kind of Captain was Forbes? - "A good one".

  1. Sorry, I served 25 years with NSG. Never heard of him.

  2. And quite likely, he never heard of you, either...

  3. Being heard of and being a good or even great leader are not direct correlations. Those who seak to get their name known are often the worst leaders.

  5. Capt MacVane was my DivO on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) during the 1st Gulf War and was as professional and fair with every decision. He retired looking very young with a great family present and after listing to the ceremony and those that knew him well, This man did it right… he worked hard, kept family first and made significant changes in the way WE do business that most will never know. He made a difference in many young Sailor’s lives.

  6. He stood the watch. Well done. A 1610 that doesn't break squelch should be the norm rather than the exception.

  7. Forbes was a charming classmate at the University of Maine and it was an honor to work with him 30 years later at Fort Meade. I look forward to seeing him again in the commercial world.
