In case you missed it...like I did

In a Change of Command ceremony rich in Navy tradition, Captain Kathryn M. Helms was relieved as Commander, National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) Hawaii by Captain David Carson on 30 March 2012.  Captain Helms retired from the Navy.  She was previously the Senior Information Warfare Officer Detailer, CO of Navy Information Operations Command Denver and served on the Commander, SEVENTH Fleet staff embarked in USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) in Yokosuka Japan.

  1. What a phenomenal officer! I have always admired her no-nonsense style, intelligence, clear guidance, and ability to push others to reach their maximum potential. Hate to see CAPT Helms leave active duty but proud to have crossed paths with her a number of times during my career. CAPT Carson is eminently qualified and will do a fantastic job. Good luck to CAPT Carson and the NSA Hawaii team.

Fair winds and following seas Kathy (er...Ma'am)...

  2. interesting and a bit troubling to see command climate surveys being used as justification for relief. perhaps there's much more to the story than what has been reported (and there usually is), but this is a slippery slope to head down. Subordinates can anonymously level claims and allegations through the survey process against leaders they don't like. Again, in this case there may have been much more to it - but the bigger picture is alarming. We're continuing to become an egalitarian Navy that allows the Indians to select and decide the fate of its Chiefs. There's a difference between servant leadership and what we're seeing now. Sad.

What?? The story is a normal change of command process, nothing more.
