Congratulations to Commander Tyrone Ward who assumed command of U.S. Navy Information Operations Command - Misawa, Japan on Friday, 11 June 2010. Some will remember that RADM James S. McFarland and RADM P.W. Dillingham were privileged to command NSGA Misawa in the 1970s.

I've known Tyrone for years... he is personal friend of mine. I met Ty back when he was a junior LT and I was an ENS just starting out Intelligence training. Over the years, I have scratched my head at some of the individuals who have been selected for command (both URL and RL), but in the case of Tyrone, this was a SOLID pick. He's had a stellar career and I have no doubt he'll be the second Crytology flag pick after RDML(Sel) Willie Metts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting.
Nice to have two black men in command of IW units. Captain Edwards at CID even has a black XO behind him. Nice to have them to look up to. These are men we can all emulate.
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunate we cannot merely celebrate the fact that we enjoy some great leaders and people within our community. Instead, we have to turn a great officer into a great "black" officer. This is but one of a few reasons I will find it challenging to stay Navy at my next career decision gate.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering, too, why the first comment made on this post was deleted. My suspicion is that it's because part of the comment was derogatory toward someone in command.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case, it makes me wonder why the comment made on the post about RDML Filipowski wasn't deleted back in May. It was derogatory toward a Flag officer.
I understand ownership of and responsibility for the blog. I'm just saying that something seems a bit uneven.

ReplyDeleteThe original comment was blatantly racist and extremely offensive (and it was anonymous) to any reasonable person. I didn't like it and deleted it. If you own up to your opinion, it might get to stay.
Blatantly racist? Really?
ReplyDeleteI don't recall anything in the comment from, I believe, Misawa Sailor that related to race. But since that's your interpretation, I'll not repeat the words I read yesterday.
Maybe more than one comment was deleted.
After 28 years of military service enlisted and officer, I still am bothered by the fact we cannot just identify a person as a person. People are not selected by themselves, someone wrote that they can command and should command, hence why Ty Ward is now in command and should be in command. He and his leadership team are now in charge and he will ensure success anyone who knows TY knows it will. Everyone has their idols to look up to but they should not be described by an adjective. But by who they are and what they have done. So lets move forward an quit judging people. Everyone deserves a chance to succeed and he or she can be the only one that causes failure.

Hard to ignore race when my CO joins a race base frat like APA and posts it on his FB for his bro.
ReplyDeleteTyrone is up for promotion this year. He didn't do anything special at Misawa. Where is he now?

ReplyDeleteYour perdiction that Ty will be selected for admiral after Will Mets will be hard since Ty didn't make captain.
Sad to see Ty didn't make the cut.
ReplyDeleteTy just wasn't good enough to make the cut for the eagles. Amused he wore a flight suit in command. He was not a flyer just a passenger.
ReplyDeleteMISAWA is a superior command. Tyrone was not in any way a superior CO.
