An Information Warfare Icon Retires Today - Cindy Widick


In honor of

Captain Cynthia L. Widick, United States Navy

The Director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service

an award and retirement ceremony
on Friday, the sixth of November two thousand and nine
ten o’clock in the morning

Captain Widick began her military career as an Army linguist (Russian) in 1975. Among the great many things she has done: she has served at sea as the Commander, SEVENTH Fleet Cryptologist, was Commanding Officer of U.S. Naval Security Group Activity Naples, Italy and completed a staff tour at Commander, Naval Security Group Command in G10 - the training directorate.

Our former Chief of Naval Operations, Vern Clark, always liked to tell Sailors, “Go write our history”…well, Cindy did exactly that. And she wrote it quietly, with no fanfare as is her style.

    In all my years, Cindy is in the top five Sailors I’ve ever known when it comes to clear thinking, strong leadership and impermeable ethics…all while being one of the nicest people alive. Aloha, Jim.

    While Jim Newman's words are hard to beat let me add that Cindy kept us all in awe at how dedicated and inspiring to our mission and people one can be. All the while she kept her sense of humor and priorities.
    It is those key people like Cindy who make us a great community.

    I noticed all of the Captains left the Navy before Sean was selected for flag. The board did not have a hard voice to make with all of these people retired.

    You're right. Every one of those Captains retired. All Sean Filipowski had to do was stick around. Each one of those Captains would have given him a run for his money to be selected as Flag. Two women also. They should have remained on active duty longer for at least a look.

    National Security Agency/Central Security Service, Threat Operations Center
    Ms. Cynthia Widick, a member of the Defense Intelligence Senior Executive Service (DISES) and the Chief of Office of Operations within the NSA/CSS Threat Operations Center (NTOC),
    leads a workforce of government civilians, military, and contractor personnel.
    Ms. Widick was the primary architect of the NTOC Operations Transformation, an effort to
    transform the current NTOC Operations Center to provision situational awareness to partners
    throughout the Defense, Cyber, and Intelligence Communities. Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Widick served in the U.S. Navy as a Cryptologic/Information Warfare officer where she held a range of leadership positions, both stateside and overseas.
    Ms. Widick retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Captain after 30 years of military service.
